In the late 1970s, the legislation mandated equal services for the disabled. The ROBIN program has grown into a comprehensive system offering diverse recreational activities. An example of programming is the TIP ice skating program, whose goal is skill development and increased self-confidence and esteem through mastery of sport. Qualified ice skating professionals evaluate participants and work either one-on-one or in small groups on ice skating skills. The success of this program can be seen in the accomplishments of the growing number of competitors in the New Jersey Special Olympics.
Seasonal programming aims to provide a basic introduction to recreation opportunities. These programs include sports skill development (such as ice skating, basketball, and soccer), arts & crafts, active and passive recreation activities, and special events or parties. One-to-one volunteers are sought for those needing extra attention. We work with Special Olympics to offer speed skating, basketball, track and field, swimming, and our young athlete's program. All that encourages teamwork and get these kids up and active.
The adult program has been expanded to provide opportunities to participate in some of the township’s most popular recreation programs, such as fitness and yoga, theater, chorus, and the ever-popular Friday Night Fun Program. Our Teen Program meets on Friday nights in the spring and fall. The Young adult program helps transition those just graduating from high school into the world around them. We hope to offer this to all our participants. We aim to someday see our recreation participants included in mainstream general recreation programs with their non-disabled peers.
The Summer ROBIN camp program for children ages seven through twenty-one operates five weeks, five days a week. Although the focus is on fun, it is hoped that the child will maintain and expand the mental, physical, and social/emotional skills acquired during the school year. Following an initial assessment, children are conditionally accepted, and every effort is made to meet their needs. Team supervisors and leaders work to develop programs geared toward the children’s needs, interests, and development. Trips are an integral part of Camp ROBIN, fun and safety are always a priority!
