Matawan Road (CR516) over Route 18 Bridge Deck Replacement
Township of Old Bridge, Middlesex County

NJDOT desires to replace the structurally deficient bridge deck of the County Route 516 over Route 18 Bridge (Structure Number 1211-152) in Old Bridge Township, Middlesex County
as part of its bridge deck replacement program. Matawan Road (CR516) is an Urban Minor Arterial on the Federal Aid Highway system traversing Middlesex County
generally in the East/West Direction. At the location of the bridge over Route 18 the roadway consists of one (1) 12 foot lane in each direction, a three (3) foot shoulder, a six (6) foot sidewalk,
and one (1) foot concrete parapet on the westbound side, a 13 foot auxiliary lane, a 1 foot-6 inch brush curb, and a one (1) foot concrete parapet on the eastbound side.
The total bridge width is 49 feet-6 inches out-to-out radial. The existing speed limit is 45 MPH. The proposed scope of work includes in-kind replacement of the bridge deck,
replacement of the impact damaged south fascia girder over Route 18 northbound, and incidental bearing replacement and minor superstructure and substructure repairs.

Traffic Control / Detour
To accelerate the construction with minimal disturbance to the community a detour is needed as part of a two-stage construction scheme.
The detour of CR516 westbound traffic by routing vehicles to the ramp from CR516 westbound to Route 18 northbound is recommended considering all traffic impacts.
Traffic will then follow Route 18 northbound for 0.6 miles to the reverse jughandle at the intersection with Hillsdale Road to make a U-turn.
The detour route then proceeds on Route 18 southbound to the exit ramp for CR516/CR527 where it ends on the west side of the bridge.
This detour route, approximately 1.7 miles long, includes one signalized intersection at Hillsdale Road and is expected to be in place for about six (6) months.
Additionally, to accommodate CR516 westbound emergency vehicle access, temporary portable traffic signals with pre-emption will be provided.
A sketch of the detour is included below.
Estimated Project Schedule
Construction Start February 26, 2016
