HOW TO APPLY FOR A MARRIAGE OR CIVIL UNION LICENSE

The application can be filed in the New Jersey town that either applicant resides in.  If both reside outside of New Jersey, they must apply in the town where the marriage or civil union ceremony will be performed.  Any documents in a foreign language must be accompanied by a certified English translation.

Both applicants must appear in person with 1 witness that knows both of you and is over the age of 18.

Applicants must bring the following:

  • Proof of identity ie. Driver’s license, passport, or state/federally issued IF
  • Proof of residency in Old Bridge (utility bill, bank statement, lease, tax return, property tax bill, or other bill with your Old Bridge address
  • Social Security card or number
  •  $28.00 in cash, money order, or check.  We do not accept credit or debit cards.

Please call to make appointments at least 1 month ahead of your marriage date.  You will need at least a 2-week time frame.  State law requires a 72-hour hold from the time of the application before the license can be issued.  As the office is only open 3 days a week, that means the earliest your license can be issued is the week following the application.  You must make an appointment to pick up your license.

It is the responsibility of the applicants to find an Officiant to perform the ceremony.  Old Bridge does not have any Officiants at the Municipal Complex.

Once the license is issued, the ceremony must take place within 30 days of the license will expire.  If your license expires, you must reapply and purchase another license.

The license is filed by the Officiant in the town where the ceremony took place.  Certified copies with a raised seal are your legal proof of the marriage/civil union.  You will need at least one certified certificate of marriage to change your name, to change beneficiaries, or to add one of you to the other’s health benefits policy.
